Torrey Pines beat Carlsbad yesterday in an exciting match at Carlsbad High School. Falcons took charge early in the game and had a good lead by the half. Our defensive game was very effective, giving the Lancers few shooting opportunities. Our counter attacks were smooth, our passing was crisp, and we shot well from the outside. Carlsbad adjusted their defense in the second half and battled their way back into the match, but Falcons had even more to give, and ultimately shut Carlsbad down. The final score in the varsity match was 10-8. JV and Novice did not fair so well, with a loss for each of those teams. The Torrey Pines Novice team competed in the Valhalla Fall Classic Invitational Tournament this past weekend. After a first round victory over Point Loma High, Falcons lost a close match to Westview, and then another to Coronado. They placed 6th overall in the Tournament.
The Falcon JV waterpolo squad advanced to the Finals at the JV Fall Classic Invitational Tournament at Valhalla High School this past weekend. Early in the day TPHS dominated their opponents, with wins against Santana High School, 14-9, and Patrick Henry, 17-8. Offensive play by the Falcons was impressive in the Championship match, but they needed to tighten up their defensive game, and Valhalla took the match 13-7. Still, a good showing was made by the Falcons in this early season tourney. This year's varsity lineup includes a good number of seniors who have been playing together since their freshman year. Their experience together was apparent Wednesday night against La Costa Canyon. The Falcons were unstoppable against the Mavericks, and beat them readily with a final score of 18-2. Torrey's defense looked solid, and the team converted their defensive plays into quick and effective counter attacks. The hole set position held strong as a reliable scoring position, and Falcons fed the ball to hole consistently and well. The Falcon JV squad also faced LCC Wednesday night in their first game of the season. The JV teams were well matched against each other, and both teams had plenty of shooting opportunities. Goals stacked for either team evenly. Tension rose in the end of the match when LCC scored to go up by one goal with under 50 seconds to go. Torrey, trailing by one point, THEN scored from hole set, made a quick steal, and drew a foul at the five meter, giving the Falcons a penalty shot. Falcons scored and took the lead with just seconds remaining. The final score was 8-7. Our Varsity team came out strong this weekend in the season opening Poway Invitational Tournament. Play began on Thursday afternoon, with Falcon victories over Santa Fe Christian 15-3, and El Camino, 12-7. Play resumed Friday afternoon with a 13-12 Falcon victory over Westview HS, landing them in the Saturday morning Semifinals at Bishop School. A strong 18-6 morning win against Valhalla served to place TPHS into the Championship match against Bishop. Torrey played very competitively and took an early first quarter lead, but Bishop scored a flurry of goals in the second quarter. Our Falcon defense adjusted well, but the team could not reestablish a lead. Bishop took the championship 12-4.
