TPHS Falcons played a hard series at La Jolla's Coggan Aquatics Center September 21-22, notching 2 wins and 3 losses. In the Friday afternoon and evening matches, TP suffered a 6-10 defeat at the hands of 2017 CIF Open runner up La Jolla, before dispatching travelers Auburn Riverside (WA) 14-2. On Friday, Torrey followed up with a solid win against Temescal Canyon 17-11, before a heartbreaking overtime 6-7 loss to San Pasqual and a hard-fought 9-12 loss to league rival Carlsbad, in which the Falcons battled back from a substantial deficit from the first quarter.
Coach Williams commented after the weekend, "We played in a very competitive tournament for the reason of facing tough competition throughout. We had very respectable showings against some of the county's best programs in La Jolla and Carlsbad and turned some heads." The Falcons will be back in the pool for home matches against University City on September 25 and Steele Canyon on September 27. TPHS Falcons made an impressive debut at the August 23-25th Bronco Invitational Tournament. During early round play on Thursday, Torrey logged an 8-6 win over Point Loma HS, followed by an 11-10 win in overtime against Granite Hills. Poway HS took a game from the Falcons Friday (8-3), knocking Torrey out of contention for a championship. The Falcons went on to beat Westview HS (8-7) and advance to play Steele Canyon, who managed to hold off the Falcon offense and grab an 8-7 victory. By Union-Tribune The 2017-18 fall season for high school sports begins the 33rd year of The San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic Team. The names of 5,611 student-athletes appear on these pages. For the 2016-17 school year, about 17,000 All-Academic Team certificates were awarded among the approximately 170,000 high school students in the San Diego Section. The All-Academic Team honors juniors and seniors who participated in a California Interscholastic Federation-approved varsity sport and maintained a cumulative, weighted grade-point average of 3.0 or better. Marks above 4.0 reflect grades from honors classes weighted on a 5.0 scale. Some school districts make more 5.0 classes available than others. The Union-Tribune and the county Office of Education invited all San Diego Section schools to participate. The names and GPAs printed here were taken from information provided by the schools. This week, the Union-Tribune will announce its All-Academic Team Captains for the fall sports. The Captain’s plaque is symbolic of each sport’s Academic Athlete of the Year. Falcon water polo ended its run for a title in the Division 1 CIF playoffs with a loss to the CCA Ravens. The quarter final match was played Friday, November 3 at the La Jolla High pool, under a spectacular sunset. The two teams were evenly matched and traded goals back and forth to a 6-6 tie at half time. Torrey led the score several times in the second half, only to have CCA tie the score again. Late in the 4th quarter CCA scored to go up by a goal, but Torrey couldn't produce a goal in response. CCA, with possession in the last seconds of the game managed to put away one more shot and clinch a 2 point lead. The final score was 10-8. CCA will advance to meet Poway in the semis.
Earlier this the week The Falcons prevailed with a 14-6 win over San Marcos High in first round CIF play. Falcons finish their 2017 season with a record of 20 wins and 9 losses overall. They will graduate two seniors this spring, #7 Brandon Schwartz, and #10 Chris Stepakis.
Falcon water polo made an impressive showing at the Sultan Highlander Varsity Invitational, Sept 7,8 and 9, taking second place overall in the tournament. Last minute changes to this season's coaching staff have been challenging for the team, but the boys have kept their focus, as demonstrated by their drive and cohesiveness this weekend. New head coach Robin Bregman clearly has the boys' respect, and the boys executed his well called plays and instruction as if they had worked with him for weeks. Finishing first place in Thursday and Friday night pool play, Torrey advanced to the Saturday semifinal, defeating San Pasqual High School, 11-9. Torrey then took on the tournament's host, Santana High, in the championship match. Santana was able to prevail with a 10-8 win over TPHS. KUSI was on hand to film the game and posted game highlights on the evening news. To view their final game and commentary, click the KUSI link above (fast forward to 5:14). The 2017 TP Falcon Water polo team kicked off the fall season at the Rancho Bernardo Bronco's Varsity Tournament, played August 24 through August 26. In Thursday evening pool play, Torrey handily defeated Valley Center HS and Rancho Buena Vista HS to finish first in their pool. First round bracket play Friday against Ranch Bernardo High led to a disappointing loss. With just 21 seconds left in the game, RB stole the ball and scored to tie the match. Falcon lost to RBHS in sudden death overtime, 7-8. A well played match Saturday morning with Grossmont left the Falcons with another loss, but our Falcons finished strong with a win over Del Norte High, 9-8. All in all, an excellent early season showing for TPHSWP. Congratulations to Kosta Karlov for signing a Letter of Intent to play water polo at UCSD. All of us in the TPHS Water Polo family are extremely proud of what these Kosta has accomplished here at Torrey Pines. We wish him the best of luck playing polo together at the next level, and hope he makes a splash at UCSD, with a successful water polo and academic career. Go Falcons!
Our Torrey Pines Falcons finished their 2016 water polo season Thursday evening, Nov. 8, with a narrow loss to Scripps Ranch High at the CIF San Diego Section Championships. Although CIF Power Rankings had placed TPHS in 8th place overall and thereby 8th seed in the Open Division playoff bracket, CIF redistributed brackets this year according to 2016 individual team results. Torrey Pines was repositioned to 2nd seed, Division 1, and received a bye in first round play. Scripps Ranch had to defeat Granite Hills in order to play Torrey in quarterfinals.
The Division 1 quarterfinal match, played at La Jolla High, opened with a 3-1 TPHS first-quarter lead. Scripps Ranch, beaten by our Falcons earlier in the season, managed to tie the game up by halftime with a score of 3-3. The game continued very competitively, going a tied score (5-5) at the start of the fourth quarter. In a well played counter attack, Scripps Ranch Falcons scored their winning goal in the last minutes of the game. Torrey took one more possession of the ball but could not produce a countering goal. Scripps Ranch held the ball to run out the clock with the score at 6-7. They advance to play Westview HS in the semifinals. Torrey has had a respectable 2016 season, with a 4-1 record in league play (Avocado West North County League), a third place finish in the Sultan Highlander Tournament, and an overall 2016 game record of 14 wins and 9 losses. Four seniors will graduate away from the team this spring. Thanks, boys, for the great season. We've enjoyed watching your games and cheering for you! Be sure to check out the CIF game photos and tons of photos from our other 2016 games, JUST UPLOADED, on our Shutterfly Share Site. Torrey Pines Falcons JV and Varsity both enjoyed decisive victories over San Dieguito Academy Tuesdat evening, October 18th. JV got off to a shaky start, trailing SDA 1-3 at the end of the first half. Coach JP refocused strategies well during the side switch, and soon into the second half Torrey had taken control of the match, ending with a 7-5 win.
Varsity trailed SDA at the end of the first quarter, but quickly turned up the heat to bring on a 14-5 win, bringing the league play stats to 4 wins, 1 loss. There are two more league games to play this season. TPHS Falcons defeated Westview High School once again, taking the Varsity, JV, and the Novice match. Torrey Varsity beat Westview readily last season to secure the Palomar League title, and took them 9-5 this Wednesday, September 28, in a non-league game. JV worked hard to secure their win Wednesday, finishing 7-6 in sudden death play after two overtimes.
Torrey Pines Varsity Falcons defeated San Marcos High School at UCSD Friday night, Sept. 23, with a 6-5 victory. JV Falcons also played well to take down San Marcos 5-3. After losing to Vista HS previously in the week, both teams are showing good development, and TPHS should preform well when they take on Westview HS this Wednesday, at Westview High.
Having graduated 13 senior water polo players last spring, the Falcons fielded a fresh lineup this weekend at the Rancho Bernardo Bronco Varsity Invitational Tournament. Falcons started strong, beating Ramona High School (7-2) and San Pasqual High school (10-5) in early rounds. Torrey took on Point Loma High in the quarter finals, narrowly losing the match with a score of 4-5. Saturday play opened with a win against Scripps Ranch (12-5), then a loss to Santana High (9-11). All in all, it was an impressive showing for the new 2016 Falcon squad.
ONE – YOUR TEAM Your team relies on you, regardless of how you perform in the water. Simply by showing up, you’re showing your teammates that you are committed to improving your times for both your team and yourself. TWO – SLEEP You can really appreciate this when you don’t workout anymore, but not having a strenuous practice everyday can affect your sleep. A grueling workout alleviates stress, and eliminates many of those worries about school or that championship games you have coming up. THREE – STAYING IN SHAPE You take this for granted as athletes, but showing up to practice automatically puts you in a position to be better looking than most. FOUR – DIET You probably would not be okay with eating those glazed donuts if you skipped that Friday evening practice. FIVE – FRIENDS Practice, despite what some coaches may say, is a great time for you to socialize. Think of where you would be without having other friends going through the same challenging workouts that you go through everyday. SIX – DEDICATION Most non-athletes cannot relate to this: walking through the front doors of school every morning, knowing that you’ve exercised more than everyone else will in a week. It’s a unique feeling, and it starts your day off on the right foot. SEVEN – GOALS Goals do not achieve themselves. They require a good work ethic and patience. Do not be discouraged by a bad swim or a bad practice. In the end, the saying always applies: “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always always got. EIGHT – FOR YOURSELF Practice can easily get repetitive at times, and it’s easy to get discouraged. By forcing yourself to go to practice, especially on a rainy day, you are telling yourself that you are committed to something. At the end of the day, regardless of how hard the practice is, there is no substitute to knowing that you gave your best effort. http://delsolmagazine.com/2015/11/01/commitment-runs-deep-for-the-torrey-pines-high-school-and-canyon-crest-academy-water-polo-teams/ In a heart breaking loss to Grossmont High School Saturday afternoon, the TPHS 2015 Boys Waterpolo season has come to an end. Our 2015 "Dream Team" included 12 talented senior players who have spent years in the pool together under the fine coaching of Tim Reed. In the past three years Coach Reed has continued to improve upon TPHS’s superior waterpolo program. His ability to develop winning teams was made quite evident this season, as demonstrated by Torrey’s 23-3 overall record, and further, by the impressive teamwork skills, discipline and and genuine camaraderie of our players. After a tremendous run of victories and achievements by our Dream Team, Torrey faced Grossmont High in the quarter finals of CIF Open Division playoffs at La Jolla High. Torrey played hard and strong, trading goals with Grossmont and pulling away to a three point lead by the end of the third quarter. Stunningly, luck took a sudden turn in favor of Grossmont, as three key Falcon players each took arguable third- foul exclusions and were ejected from the game. Grossmont’s adrenaline surged, and they fired off several well placed shots to tie the match. With less than two minutes left in the game, Grossmont scored again. Our opportunity for counter score was deflected, and Grossmont held the ball to run out the clock. The final score was 13-14. The Falcon Varsity cruised to an easy 18-2 win against Ramona High School Wednesday night, at UCSD in Torrey's last home game of the season. Torrey has been undefeated in league play this year with a win record of 5-0. The 2015 team has recorded 18 straight victories, breaking the TPHS record for “Longest Winning Streak”. The previous record was 13 games, held by the 2011 team. This year's team also is on pace to break the record for “Goals Scored per Game” of 12.6 held by the 2006 team. Currently, the team is averaging 13.8 goals per game. TPHS has had an impressive season this year with an overall record of 23 wins and only 2 losses, both of which occurred in late rounds of tournament play. Junior Varsity has had a good season as well, undefeated in league play and with an overall record of 15 wins and 6 losses. Our Varsity will continue on to the Open Division of CIF playoffs in mid November, third ranked among the top eight teams in the county. Torrey Pines took third out of 48 teams entered in the San Diego Open Tournament, which began Monday evening, October 24 at Valhalla High School. The Falcons won their pool in the first round games, beating Fallbrook High and University City. They returned to Valhalla HS Friday afternoon to defeat Santana High. Saturday morning play started at Granite Hills against Mercer Island High, out of Washington. Torrey let their 9-4 lead slip in the fourth quarter, turning the match into a nail biter as Mercer tied the match up 10-10. The game remained tied in two overtimes and went to two sudden death periods, where finally Torrey prevailed and advanced to the semifinals. Falcons were eventually beaten in the semis by four-time Washington State Champion Bellevue High, with a final score of 3-4. Bellevue went on to beat University City 11-6 for the Tournament title. Falcon Varsity dominated Westview High at UCSD Thursday night, becoming the Palomar League Champions for the second consecutive year. Torrey rolled through Westview with a final score of 14-6. The Falcons have been undefeated in league play this season, and have an overall game record 20-1. KUSI was on hand to film the game; check out the news clip on the link above. JV and Novice played Westview Wednesday evening, with a win for JV 10-3, and a loss in sudden death overtime for the Novice squad. Falcon Junior Varsity finished 4th in a field of 32 teams at the San Diego Open Tournament, played Monday Oct 19 through Saturday the 24th. Our JV started the week with impressive wins against Patrick Henry HS, 8-5, and later that evening against Grossmont HS, 11-3. Play resumed Friday evening, where Torrey crafted a 6-5 win over San Pasqual. That landed them in the Semifinals of tournament play Saturday morning at Valhalla High. Valhalla had brought two separate JV teams to the tourney, and it was their top squad that took our Falcons down 11-6. Torrey played a final match in the afternoon against Vista, who took an early lead and left Torrey in fourth place. The final game score was 6-13. Cathedral Catholic prevailed over Valhalla HS in the Finals, and took the tournament title.
Torrey Falcons swept the field at Poway HS last night. JV began the onslaught, beating Poway handily with a score of 11-7. Varsity took the field next, and never let Poway in the door, finishing with a decisive 14-7 win. Novice completed the sweep with a win in sudden death overtime play. So far Torrey stands undefeated in league play. Torrey Pines faces Westview High next week in their final league game, and aims to take the Palomar League title again. KUSI was at the match, and you can watch their evening news clip by clicking the link below. The score was 11-8, and Torrey Pines Varsity was not quite finished with University City High School Tuesday evening when the lights went out. The game had begun with fast, aggressive play, and Coach Reed was stuck with the whistle as no referees were on hand to start the match. UCHS has a strong, physically talented roster of players, and Torrey was holding tough against them. During the second quarter a referee arrived on the scene and Reed could finally coach… and the Falcons began taking charge of the game. Then, just as the teams had lined up to begin the fourth quarter, the stadium lights shut off. The pool lights remained on, creating a lovely ambiance as if a Bellagio fountain spectacular were beginning- not the final quarter of a scrapping polo match. Unfortunately after several minutes it was determined that the lights would take far too long to power back up and the game was called. It sure looked like an eminent win for the Falcons. Meanwhile in the JV tank, things did not go as well. Our JV Falcons played well but shooting accuracy was a bit down. JV suffered a 4-8 loss to UCHS. Novice also had a good match but it got away, with a 6-8 loss. |
