http://delsolmagazine.com/2015/11/01/commitment-runs-deep-for-the-torrey-pines-high-school-and-canyon-crest-academy-water-polo-teams/ In a heart breaking loss to Grossmont High School Saturday afternoon, the TPHS 2015 Boys Waterpolo season has come to an end. Our 2015 "Dream Team" included 12 talented senior players who have spent years in the pool together under the fine coaching of Tim Reed. In the past three years Coach Reed has continued to improve upon TPHS’s superior waterpolo program. His ability to develop winning teams was made quite evident this season, as demonstrated by Torrey’s 23-3 overall record, and further, by the impressive teamwork skills, discipline and and genuine camaraderie of our players. After a tremendous run of victories and achievements by our Dream Team, Torrey faced Grossmont High in the quarter finals of CIF Open Division playoffs at La Jolla High. Torrey played hard and strong, trading goals with Grossmont and pulling away to a three point lead by the end of the third quarter. Stunningly, luck took a sudden turn in favor of Grossmont, as three key Falcon players each took arguable third- foul exclusions and were ejected from the game. Grossmont’s adrenaline surged, and they fired off several well placed shots to tie the match. With less than two minutes left in the game, Grossmont scored again. Our opportunity for counter score was deflected, and Grossmont held the ball to run out the clock. The final score was 13-14. The Falcon Varsity cruised to an easy 18-2 win against Ramona High School Wednesday night, at UCSD in Torrey's last home game of the season. Torrey has been undefeated in league play this year with a win record of 5-0. The 2015 team has recorded 18 straight victories, breaking the TPHS record for “Longest Winning Streak”. The previous record was 13 games, held by the 2011 team. This year's team also is on pace to break the record for “Goals Scored per Game” of 12.6 held by the 2006 team. Currently, the team is averaging 13.8 goals per game. TPHS has had an impressive season this year with an overall record of 23 wins and only 2 losses, both of which occurred in late rounds of tournament play. Junior Varsity has had a good season as well, undefeated in league play and with an overall record of 15 wins and 6 losses. Our Varsity will continue on to the Open Division of CIF playoffs in mid November, third ranked among the top eight teams in the county. Torrey Pines took third out of 48 teams entered in the San Diego Open Tournament, which began Monday evening, October 24 at Valhalla High School. The Falcons won their pool in the first round games, beating Fallbrook High and University City. They returned to Valhalla HS Friday afternoon to defeat Santana High. Saturday morning play started at Granite Hills against Mercer Island High, out of Washington. Torrey let their 9-4 lead slip in the fourth quarter, turning the match into a nail biter as Mercer tied the match up 10-10. The game remained tied in two overtimes and went to two sudden death periods, where finally Torrey prevailed and advanced to the semifinals. Falcons were eventually beaten in the semis by four-time Washington State Champion Bellevue High, with a final score of 3-4. Bellevue went on to beat University City 11-6 for the Tournament title. |
