Our Torrey Pines Falcons finished their 2016 water polo season Thursday evening, Nov. 8, with a narrow loss to Scripps Ranch High at the CIF San Diego Section Championships. Although CIF Power Rankings had placed TPHS in 8th place overall and thereby 8th seed in the Open Division playoff bracket, CIF redistributed brackets this year according to 2016 individual team results. Torrey Pines was repositioned to 2nd seed, Division 1, and received a bye in first round play. Scripps Ranch had to defeat Granite Hills in order to play Torrey in quarterfinals.
The Division 1 quarterfinal match, played at La Jolla High, opened with a 3-1 TPHS first-quarter lead. Scripps Ranch, beaten by our Falcons earlier in the season, managed to tie the game up by halftime with a score of 3-3. The game continued very competitively, going a tied score (5-5) at the start of the fourth quarter. In a well played counter attack, Scripps Ranch Falcons scored their winning goal in the last minutes of the game. Torrey took one more possession of the ball but could not produce a countering goal. Scripps Ranch held the ball to run out the clock with the score at 6-7. They advance to play Westview HS in the semifinals. Torrey has had a respectable 2016 season, with a 4-1 record in league play (Avocado West North County League), a third place finish in the Sultan Highlander Tournament, and an overall 2016 game record of 14 wins and 9 losses. Four seniors will graduate away from the team this spring. Thanks, boys, for the great season. We've enjoyed watching your games and cheering for you!
