The Falcons defeated league rival Canyon Crest Academy 9-8 on Senior Night. With the score tied at 8 and one minute remaining in the game, Jacob Burgess (10) scored the game winning goal with 19 seconds left off a cross pass by Noah Inada (10). TPHS started slowly, trailing 3-1 in the first quarter. The second quarter was more of the same as the Falcons faced a 4-2 deficit at halftime. Torrey's halfcourt offense was stymied and the defense was questionable. However, in the third period, TPHS's counterattack created great scoring opportunities and the Falcons capitalized, quickly tying the game at 4. TP traded goals with the Ravens the rest of the way through, the intensity in the crowd multiplying as the game became a back and forth seesaw affair. But the Falcons pulled through with one last counter in the final minute, the knockout punch delivered Jacob Burgess launched a low skip from 10 meters out for the win with the shot clock expiring and 19 seconds left on the game clock. The Falcons made one final stop on the Ravens' possession and held out for an exhilarating 9-8 victory on Senior Night. Congratulations to everyone!
On Tuesday, the Falcons took on Palomar League opponent Mt. Carmel at UCSD. TPHS continued their water polo dominance over Mt. Carmel, with the combined JV/Novice team capturing an easy victory. The Varsity squad followed up this performance with a resounding 13-4 win over the Sundevils.
Goals: Moore (TP) 4, Colbert (TP) 2, Z. Applegate (TP) 2, Roll (TP) 2. On Thursday, the Falcons hosted the Patrick Henry Patriots for a nonleague battle at UCSD. The JV and Novice teams dominated their games, winning 16-1 and 14-2, respectively. The varsity game was more competitive, as Patrick Henry fielded a strong team, but the Falcons took control of the game in a 9-5 victory. The next day, the JV team competed in the JV Fall Classic at Grossmont HS. They won their first two games easily and blazed through their first two games on Saturday. However, in the championship game, they met a formidable opponent and lost a tight game to finish in 2nd place. It was a great effort by our boys as three games in one day is a grueling task. Congratulations to our JV squad and everyone for some very nice wins this week! |
