By Union-Tribune The 2017-18 fall season for high school sports begins the 33rd year of The San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic Team. The names of 5,611 student-athletes appear on these pages. For the 2016-17 school year, about 17,000 All-Academic Team certificates were awarded among the approximately 170,000 high school students in the San Diego Section. The All-Academic Team honors juniors and seniors who participated in a California Interscholastic Federation-approved varsity sport and maintained a cumulative, weighted grade-point average of 3.0 or better. Marks above 4.0 reflect grades from honors classes weighted on a 5.0 scale. Some school districts make more 5.0 classes available than others. The Union-Tribune and the county Office of Education invited all San Diego Section schools to participate. The names and GPAs printed here were taken from information provided by the schools. This week, the Union-Tribune will announce its All-Academic Team Captains for the fall sports. The Captain’s plaque is symbolic of each sport’s Academic Athlete of the Year.
