Torrey Varsity and JV rolled easily through Mt. Carmel Thursday evening, Oct. 8th, with crushing scores of 19-4 (Varsity) and 12-2 (JV). Falcons will square off against CCA our next league match, to be played at Cathedral HS Thursday, October 15. See our PHOTOS pages for more photos from last night's games. And here are some photo highlights from the JV match...
Torrey Pines beat Carlsbad yesterday in an exciting match at Carlsbad High School. Falcons took charge early in the game and had a good lead by the half. Our defensive game was very effective, giving the Lancers few shooting opportunities. Our counter attacks were smooth, our passing was crisp, and we shot well from the outside. Carlsbad adjusted their defense in the second half and battled their way back into the match, but Falcons had even more to give, and ultimately shut Carlsbad down. The final score in the varsity match was 10-8. JV and Novice did not fair so well, with a loss for each of those teams. The Torrey Pines Novice team competed in the Valhalla Fall Classic Invitational Tournament this past weekend. After a first round victory over Point Loma High, Falcons lost a close match to Westview, and then another to Coronado. They placed 6th overall in the Tournament.
The Falcon JV waterpolo squad advanced to the Finals at the JV Fall Classic Invitational Tournament at Valhalla High School this past weekend. Early in the day TPHS dominated their opponents, with wins against Santana High School, 14-9, and Patrick Henry, 17-8. Offensive play by the Falcons was impressive in the Championship match, but they needed to tighten up their defensive game, and Valhalla took the match 13-7. Still, a good showing was made by the Falcons in this early season tourney. This year's varsity lineup includes a good number of seniors who have been playing together since their freshman year. Their experience together was apparent Wednesday night against La Costa Canyon. The Falcons were unstoppable against the Mavericks, and beat them readily with a final score of 18-2. Torrey's defense looked solid, and the team converted their defensive plays into quick and effective counter attacks. The hole set position held strong as a reliable scoring position, and Falcons fed the ball to hole consistently and well. The Falcon JV squad also faced LCC Wednesday night in their first game of the season. The JV teams were well matched against each other, and both teams had plenty of shooting opportunities. Goals stacked for either team evenly. Tension rose in the end of the match when LCC scored to go up by one goal with under 50 seconds to go. Torrey, trailing by one point, THEN scored from hole set, made a quick steal, and drew a foul at the five meter, giving the Falcons a penalty shot. Falcons scored and took the lead with just seconds remaining. The final score was 8-7. Our Varsity team came out strong this weekend in the season opening Poway Invitational Tournament. Play began on Thursday afternoon, with Falcon victories over Santa Fe Christian 15-3, and El Camino, 12-7. Play resumed Friday afternoon with a 13-12 Falcon victory over Westview HS, landing them in the Saturday morning Semifinals at Bishop School. A strong 18-6 morning win against Valhalla served to place TPHS into the Championship match against Bishop. Torrey played very competitively and took an early first quarter lead, but Bishop scored a flurry of goals in the second quarter. Our Falcon defense adjusted well, but the team could not reestablish a lead. Bishop took the championship 12-4.

Varsity won 10-8 in a nail-biter at Westview, four days after dropping a tournament game against them and a slow start today. JV won 8-4 with a strong defensive effort. Novice won 4-3 to complete the league title sweep. Team photo featured in the Del Mar Times. The Falcons defeated league rival Canyon Crest Academy 9-8 on Senior Night. With the score tied at 8 and one minute remaining in the game, Jacob Burgess (10) scored the game winning goal with 19 seconds left off a cross pass by Noah Inada (10). TPHS started slowly, trailing 3-1 in the first quarter. The second quarter was more of the same as the Falcons faced a 4-2 deficit at halftime. Torrey's halfcourt offense was stymied and the defense was questionable. However, in the third period, TPHS's counterattack created great scoring opportunities and the Falcons capitalized, quickly tying the game at 4. TP traded goals with the Ravens the rest of the way through, the intensity in the crowd multiplying as the game became a back and forth seesaw affair. But the Falcons pulled through with one last counter in the final minute, the knockout punch delivered Jacob Burgess launched a low skip from 10 meters out for the win with the shot clock expiring and 19 seconds left on the game clock. The Falcons made one final stop on the Ravens' possession and held out for an exhilarating 9-8 victory on Senior Night. Congratulations to everyone!
On Tuesday, the Falcons took on Palomar League opponent Mt. Carmel at UCSD. TPHS continued their water polo dominance over Mt. Carmel, with the combined JV/Novice team capturing an easy victory. The Varsity squad followed up this performance with a resounding 13-4 win over the Sundevils.
Goals: Moore (TP) 4, Colbert (TP) 2, Z. Applegate (TP) 2, Roll (TP) 2. On Thursday, the Falcons hosted the Patrick Henry Patriots for a nonleague battle at UCSD. The JV and Novice teams dominated their games, winning 16-1 and 14-2, respectively. The varsity game was more competitive, as Patrick Henry fielded a strong team, but the Falcons took control of the game in a 9-5 victory. The next day, the JV team competed in the JV Fall Classic at Grossmont HS. They won their first two games easily and blazed through their first two games on Saturday. However, in the championship game, they met a formidable opponent and lost a tight game to finish in 2nd place. It was a great effort by our boys as three games in one day is a grueling task. Congratulations to our JV squad and everyone for some very nice wins this week! The team prepared all week for the America's Finest City Invitational, a prestigious and extremely high-level tournament featuring some of the best teams in the state. After a full slate of practices from Monday-Thursday, a varsity squad of 18 boys traveled to Rancho Bernardo HS to kick off the AFC's group stage on Friday afternoon.
Seeded 23rd overall and 6th in their group, TPHS would face Palos Verdes in the opening game. The Falcons took an early lead in the first quarter with outside shooting. TPHS maintained control through the second quarter, limiting PV's counterattack, but a crucial two-goal swing in PV's favor in the last minute of the half was an ominous sign as TP was down 6-5. Coming off the half, the Falcons were demoralized and gave up easy counterattack goals that saw them fall even more behind, and they could not recover as they suffered a 13-8 defeat. Friday's second game would be against Oaks Christian from the Thousands Oaks area. It was a close game throughout, but the Falcons always struck first with a strong counterattack. Leading 8-5 at the break, the Falcon offense stalled in the third quarter and allowed Oaks Christian to tie the game at 8. However, Trevor Colbert scored a critical goal that gave the Falcons a lead, hole set Jacob Roll scored an insurance goal with 0.65 seconds left, and TPHS played stifling defense to ride out an 11-9 win. Saturday's three games would be played at La Jolla HS Coggan Pool based on Friday's results. The first game was against Fountain Valley of Orange County, and TPHS was overpowered in a 13-5 defeat. The second game was against Lodi which is north of Stockton. Lodi played well and took control of the game in the third period, sending the Falcons to an 11-5 loss. The final game of the tournament was against local league rival Poway. TPHS dominated the game throughout with perimeter shooting and solid defense. The Falcons led 5-2 at half and finished up with a well-deserved 10-4 victory. The Falcons played five games in two days, finishing with a 2-3 record and a 23rd place finish. It was a great learning experience for everyone to play some good out of the area teams. 5/31/12 - Fordham Water Polo Announces 2012 Recruiting Class
